Measuring for kitchens

All kitchens are designed around modular sizes. The standard depth of each module is 600mm (about 2ft) which is the distance from the front edge of worktops to the wall. The widths of base units can be 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm, 800mm or 1000mm. Corner floor units will often be odd sizes so the veneers match up with the units on either side.

All standard domestic appliances (cookers, washing machines, dishwashers, refridgerators and upright freezers) are designed to fit in a space 600mm wide and 600mm deep. Kitchen wall cupboards have the same width as base units, but depths (and heights) vary from make to make.

Measuring for tiles

Use a piece of 25mm x 50mm timber around 1.2m long to make a gauging stick – marked off with common tile sizes (normally 15mm square and 150mm x 200mm rectangular), allowing for a 2mm gap between tiles for grouting. This gauging stick can then be used to measure the height and the width of the required tiled area to see how many tiles fit each way – add five per cent for breakages and for cutting at the edges. The stick will also show where to start tiling – it's best to have equal sizes of cut tiles at each end of a wall (between two other walls), each cut tile being less than half a tile in width.

Measuring for floor tiles is similar, except the tile size will be different (typically 200mm or 300mm square) and you may want to centre tiles on a feature in the room.

Installing Worktops

Granite is a very stable but rigid material which will not bend or flex in worktop thickness.

Because it is a natural material it can incorporate natural flaws, pot marks, veining and irregularities and cannot be guaranteed to remain consistent throughout the whole installation

Breakages can and do occur during the manufacturing process. Should this be the case delays can become inevitable.

Granite is difficult to work requiring water cooled diamond tooling.
When installed, some worktops may appear to vary in colour. This may be due to reflectors in granite moving in different plains i.e. L shaped worktops in colours such as Blue or Emerald Pearl

Granite joints are finished with a small ariss (chamfer) to the top edge, silicone sealant is applied to prevent liquid penetration

Granite is sometimes susceptible to "blowing out". This occurs when contact is made with the material whilst cutting or grinding. This is very common in large particled granite. We fill and seal the affected areas with epoxy resin (colour may vary) to ensure the material is not left with any sharp edges or "chips".

Baltic Brown, Giallo Veneziano and sometimes other lighter colours, are resin treated at source to fill natural flaws and pot marks.

Slips (kit form) around sink and hob cut-outs are fitted in certain circumstances. If tops are too long and depending upon type and size of cutout etc.

Although one of the least absorbent stones, Granite can be stained by grease, wine, coffee, nicotine, fruit juices, even champagne! Any spillage must be removed immediately from a granite worktop.

Limiting factors like access, stairs, service lift size, fragile nature of the tops should also be taken into consideration. This can affect the cost of installation and the lengths of sections that can be used
Size of "scant" or "slab", is a major factor in selecting the maximum usable length of a worktop.

Approximately 2.8-3m is the largest work surface we are able to manufacture; this may be drastically reduced if you require a cutout, especially in granites with larger crystals.

Where walls are not absolutely straight, it may be necessary to chisel a channel in the wall to accept the back of the granite top. To cut granite to follow uneven walls is possible but the cost may prove prohibitive

Upstands are generally 20mm thick and 100mm high with a polished top edge. It is usually cheaper to move electrical sockets than to cut the upstands to go around them.

It is important that the installed base units are level and strong enough to support the weight of the granite 2.6m x .6m will weigh approximately 145kg or 23 stone. It is also important to remember that granite might need additional support around sink areas. Occasionally clients have a void or an appliance at the end of a run of units in these cases there should be sufficient support in the form of wall battening and end support to carry the weight of the top.

Internal profile edges must have a radius of at least 50mm due to the diameter of the cutting tool used

Rock Revelations provide worktops in 20mm and 30mm. Thickness may vary as some slabs are not available in 20mm. Standard worktop thickness is 30mm and standard width of 600mm.

There are different edging profiles that the customer can choose from. There is Chamfered, Pencil, Bull Nose, Half Bull Nose, Ogee, Waterfall and many others.

Quotations: worktops are priced using a number of variables the amount of granite required, number and type of cut outs, drainer grooves, profiled and polished edges and site location.

Rock Revelations do not stock large quantities of granite but purchase and transport to the UK the material for each kitchen as they are ordered.

The manufacturing process requires significant input in terms of labour and diamond tooling and sections, once cut and shaped, would not be suitable for any other client. We therefore require payment of 80% of the cost of the worktops at the time of ordering. The balance is payable on successful installation.

Rock Revelations prefer to undertake the whole granite worktop process from templating right through to fitting. That way if anything goes wrong it's down to us to sort it out. Some clients prefer to template and fit themselves. In these cases we will manufacture exactly to template but not take responsibility for any problems during installation or breakages.

Digitizing equipment and CNC stone processing machinery. The digitizer will enable us to take absolutely precise measurements without having to rely on the restrictions of sawing plywood templates. The data is then transferred to our CNC machine which automates 90% of the worktop production processes. State-of-the-art technology. There are a large number of advantages including consistent quality from measuring to fitting.
